“Who is Gideon Gray…? There is the legend and then there is the truth. Which is it you want?
Captain Gideon is as cunning as he is ruthless and he’s as ruthless as a tank full of hungry sharks. His love, a demi-goddess was taken against her will by another, also a demi-god, who makes his home atop of a floating castle in the sky.
So it was that the good Captain sold his soul to the eldest of all dragons in exchange for an amulet which makes him immortal, though if the legend if you believe such things is that he can still be be killed but he will never age.
He has used his several lifetimes amassing a fortune beyond what anyone can imagine in an effort to locate the flying citadel after which he will mount an assault with an army of the toughest cutthroats and brigands he can bribe or coerce. The things a man will do for love eh?
Oh and while we’re at it he never misses, no woman can bring herself to refuse him, and if you can get him to say his name backwards you can take his powers for yourself.
If you believe such things of course……
The truth is a bit longer:
Gideon Gray was born to affluent parents in a well to do part of Sharn. He had a childhood
typical of his station, while he did want for certain things he never went hungry or lacked in friends. His father was a the foreman of one of the warehouses in Precarious, so young Gideon spent many a day watching the airships come and go and unload their cargo at the sky docks. His mother was a lesser member of house Lyrandar, she did not bear the mark and was the bastard daughter of a well-known airship captain. When he as of age he started working at the warehouse under his father learning the trade learning how to lead men, and get things done. He was mediocre in the job, it wasn’t that he couldn’t get the men to do as he asked, they did whatever he needed them to for he was fair in his expectations, it’s just his heart was not in it. Listening to the captains as they would unload their cargo he heard their tales and this is what he craved, adventure, the rush of adrenaline, and the thrill of the unknown. He signed on with an airship crew and learned the “ropes.” He travelled the world loading and unloading cargo, but this was still not enough for him. He was a little better at this then working in his father’s warehouse. Then came that fateful day in Xendrick.
His crew was set upon by Drow raiders, apparently some of the cargo, they were transporting was of religious significance to them. They never saw the attack coming. Most of the crew was decimated, of the survivors many ran off into the jungle and were never seen or heard from again. The rest Gideon managed to pull together and lead to relative safety in one of the lifeboats. Adrift at sea he manages to keep them alive until they are picked up by a passing merchant vessel. Upon returning home to Sharn, he and the remaining crew are summarily dismissed from their positions for losing the cargo. Unable to find other work he begins to drink heavily as he slowly drinks away what little money he has, the taverns he frequents become less and less reputable. It is in one of these places he meets
Capt. Ivar Steelshadow of the Thune. Capt. Steelshadow has heard his story and offers him a chance at revenge on the Drow. Gideon rapidly jumps at the chance for revenge against the people that took his life from him, it want much of a life but it was his.
The Thune pulled out of port the next morning at first light and was headed to Xendrick. Gideon was not the strongest member of the crew, that was an Orc named Audrian, nor was he fastest hat was the half-elf Aust d’Orien (being able to teleport does that). However he was the most dedicated to their mission. Upon arriving at Xendrick Gideon, Audrian, Aust and the other non duergar members of the crew were sent in first. This was by design as Capt. Stormshadow had just hired them on as fodder to weaken and distract the Drow so he could get what he wanted the Amulet of Duerra a duergar artifact lost many eons ago and traced here. The crew managed to ambush the Drow and after a prolonged battle they were able to come out victorious. As they headed back to the beach where the Thune was docked they to see it sailing off into the distance. Marooned in a foreign land many of the crew was distraught wondering how they would survive. Gideon assumed command and was able to set up a small encampment and keep the crew alive all the while searching for a way out of this nightmare.
During an expedition into the interior of the continent the survivors found of all things a derelict airship, no one knew how long it had been there or where it came from. The hauled the ship back to the encampment and worked on repairing it, it was a way out and a way to exact revenge on the Thune and Capt. Steelshadow. While working day and night, to finish the repairs to the ship the discovered some secret compartments in the ship, in one of these compartments was something that he knew would allow him his revenge, it was half of the Amulet of Duerra. The ship was soon finished. The trip home gave Gideon some time to think.
He could no longer be as he was.
He was born to lead men.
He was born to be free.
When the ship returned to Sharn he allowed those who wished to disembark the rest he turned into his crew, Audrian and Aust stayed on Audrian as Quartermaster and Aust the engineer of the elemental engine. Thus was born the true legend of both Capt. Gideon Gray and the Sweet Delight.
